Today I am putting up a painting of mine I have titled “Black Ice”. It is a opaque watercolor with a heavy emphasis on the mystery of the pose of the woman. She seems to be sad and lost in thought. Sometimes we have to tell the story as it is and this is one of those moments.
Here is another revisit of one of my paintings an oil painting of Botswana. I have written a poem about it that reflects my feeling of the change that happens when a weather front comes through. The painting is a very direct piece that I did in on short session, my goal to just capture the energy of the weather and the beautiful light.
When I started writing poems to go along with my paintings in the Rockport workshop I struck on the idea of going back through some of my paintings and writing verse to go along with them. This is an attempt to explain the mood of the painting, or a reaction to the painting now. It is not really a how I painted it poem or what I was thinking about. Just the image of the work and what it says to me. It might say something different to you.
I am tired of the winter. I am tired of traditional oils. I am tired of representational watercolors so I stacked up a bunch of 9×12 linen canvases and used the 4 colors I had Carbon Black, Australian Ghost Gum, Transparent Umber and Matisse Red light and using a sponge applicator I painted these 3
I will be conducting the Rockport, Maine workshop again this year. It is either a one week workshops or can be combined for a wonderful 2 week experience. This has been a very popular arrangement and students like to see both mediums presented.
This watercolor demonstration is all about the energy of the brush and the preserving of white paper to create a very exciting painting of surf as it runs past rocks. The color palette is Cobalt, and Cerulean Blue, and New Gamboge with the browns being a combination of Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue and Alizirin Crimson.
