Invention is the requirement plein-air

Yesterday in Camden the weather was again overcast and windy.  For my demonstration I wanted to paint a more sunny day and  to be able to acentuate the early fall colors.  I designed my painting on the foundation of solid white shapes and limited my shapes to about 4 major shapes.

Yesterday in Camden the weather was again overcast and windy.  For my demonstration I wanted to paint a more sunny day and  to be able to acentuate the early fall colors.  I designed my painting on the foundation of solid white shapes and limited my shapes to about 4 major shapes.  Doing this improved my focus and barring a total disaster in the colors and application of paint gave me a shot a solid composition.  I amplified the colors and brightened the sky from my memory of sunny days in Maine and here is the result.  Oh and I added the cows from another part of the field, they just didn’t want to pose for me.  Enjoy and have a nice day.watercolor on 300lb arches paper

  1. What good teaching to paint plein air, about how to invent a climate that we dont have in front of us, or add figures to our scene from another part of the view in order to give a center of interest. The watercolor that you have uploaded is beautiful. Thanks Steve.
