The painting is a quick study in opaque watercolor for several other paintings I did of the same subject. I like the direct brushwork and muted colors I can get with the opaque paint. Being able to put the lights on top of the darks allows me to define the light without having to cut
This painting and poem is based on a morning in the Kalahari Desert, when the sun was extremely bright and the temperatures were quickly rising. We were headed to Deception Valley and I just felt an unbelievable attachment to the land and all those who had walked this ground for as long as we have been on the planet.
This sunset painting was a demonstration for one of my classes. I was trying to explain the concept of value control and how value affects color. If the color is wrong most times its the value that is off. Analyze the values in the major shapes and keep relating those values to the ones that
I spent the morning continuing to work on the Africa series but it has really become the Botswana Kalahari Desert series I am trying to get that feeling of dryness and survival in these works. The scratched lines represent the travel paths of the animals who come and go in search of food and water in one of the more inhospitable places on earth. I am getting there but I have a long way to go. I am putting up 4 images on 2 separate posts.
I am pretty excited about several new series I have started in the last few days. This first is based on the Africa landscape or just the color forms of this wonderful and dramatic part of the world. At this point, I am emphasizing the dry desert as it comes close to the Okavanga Delta. The crisscrossing lines of animal tracks as they move between watering spots and vegetation. I have a feeling that I might pursue this to a major series of 20- 30 works. We’ll see.
