Plein-Air in the fog at Pemaquid Point

It was a lovely sublime day with lots of surf and the rolling bands of thick to moderate fog.  It is always a challenge to paint in these conditions because the value range is so close and it is very hard to stay within these values.  Plus the colors are very muted and cool and it is easy to try and amp things up to get more contrast and more drama and that is not fog.

Today I taught the workshop in the fog at Pemaquid. So I kept the colors blues, mauves and siennas to try to keep the greys lively but semi authentic.  I also kept the shapes dominant and merged together.  Here are my two paintings from today one is a watercolor and the other a 20 minute oil demonstration.watercolor demonstration Plein air on 300 lb Arches paper 30 minute plein air oil demonstration

  1. Very instructive comparison of the same subject to watercolor and oil. Thanks Steve.

  2. Both works perfectly give me the impression of seeing a scene through the fog. They are very atmospheric and really beautiful. You’re the best. With best regards Mercedes
