Jumpstart: Get more acquainted with your brush

In this exercise that I did for my watercolor class I had them work with one brush and primarily black paint and just express yourself on partially wet paper, some places wet, some dry and some just damp.

In this exercise that I did for my watercolor class I had them work with one brush and primarily black paint and just express yourself on partially wet paper, some places wet, some dry and some just damp.  Then with only one brush try to create and expressive painting that focuses just on the range of values and the varieties of brushwork.  It was a good lesson for all and since that date all of my students have really shown great strides in their paintings.  Try this on a fairly large piece of paper and turn up some music and get involved with the brush, paint and paper.  All three of these images were painted in about 60 minutes combined time.  Have fun.
