“On The Edge Of Darkness” Oil Demonstration

Oils
Painting & Poetry

This painting is slightly spooky, I painted the trees as just a dark transparent value and cut around the expressive tree shapes and lines with a golden opaque color with a blue glaze.  The prose poem is an homage to Poe and Irving and brings us into the Halloween season.

Edge of darkness falls

Malevolent black trees claw

Like witches erupting

From graves, their burnt finger brooms

Cackling into the blood sky

The skeleton trees a lattice against the ripening sunset conjured an ominous feeling as we sipped our drinks in this landscape steeped in dark superstitions. Our world became claustrophobic as nature’s walls closed tightly around us. After a day of magical images, sound replaced sight and our imaginations became fertile ground for our fears and insecurities.

Sunset stained like paint

Eyes watch, as ink dark trees creep

Walk fast never run
