“Rappahanock River”

In my Friday oil class I painted this painting for them. The focus of the piece is the warm afternoon light on the water and trees, and although I wanted the entire painting to be interesting I wanted to keep the concept simple. I think I accomplished that although I wish I was handling the edges better but time will work that out. Rapphanock River11x14 oil on canvas panel “Rappahannock River”

  1. Steve, I really like this piece! I wish I were articulate enough to explain why, but it has to do with the limited color choices and the simplicity and quiet conveyed in the composition. Really beautiful.

    • Thanks I kept the color palette very cool and grey so the accents of the orange leaves would really be in contrast and come forward. You are right it is a very simple composition and usually that is a good starting point for any painting

  2. I really like your result. The river of cold blue water reflects a sky at dusk and the orange tone on the leaves contrasts beautifully as if the light of the Sun at sunset was illuminating them

  3. Thank you Steve. Your demo is a great lesson in keeping it simple, less is more etc. I like the composition, the depth, and the mood of your late afternoon painting. The few warm orange/brown leaves are such a lovely focal point. Personally the edges are not bothering me as the softness seems to add to the mood.
