This last Thursday in my Art League class I painted these two demonstrations based on the them of the color of light on buildings, I hope you like them. I tried to get a nice feeling of the light from the sky radiating across the surface of the landscape. It you use Carlson’s Guide to Landscape Painting as the guide you will find that your landscapes feel more like what you are really seeing. The sky is the lightest part of your painting and all of the horizontal to the sky are slightly darker. The trees or the uprights are darkest and the angle planes to the sky are slightly darker than the horizontals, all of this sounds very confusing but it is not, get a copy of the book and use his guide as your reference and your paintings will be much more reflective of the landscape.
Lots of light here and remember that although the trees are darks the tops of them are horizontal planes and need to reflect the effect of the sky.Keep your brushwork lively using all the edges of your brush and really focus on getting the feeling of the light. Don’t just copy colors but analyze why.
Hi Steve. I was very anxious to read you. Wonderful lesson today and fantastic your watercolors, as always you make them. Please would you give me a link to get a free copy of the book, Carlson’s Guide to landscape painting? Thank you for sharing. Respectfully Mercedes
