This painting again is about my playing with watercolor trying to find my groove again, as I said it moved along and packed it’s bags and gone to someone else’s studio. Hopefully it returns with great ideas and a new enthusiasm. As Stephen King says in his wriiting memoir “keep work so your muse knows where to find you”. I trusting you Stephen.
I will be using pure colors applied with little water and then layer opaque paint to modified and tone the under colors. Have fun.
A simple strong line will establish the low horizon composition, I do love a powerful line, they are not as easy to do as they look.
Thick red’s applied with a stiff bristled oil brush, I am using cad scarlet, cad red deep and orange, and the blue is sky blue. I think I should have stopped here I like this minimal abstraction.
More pigment establishing the form and saturation the colors, make them rich so they will be a strong undercolor for the opaque lights that come at the end. Apply the pigment with a stiff brush and very little water.
Thalo yellow green hansa yellow are texturally brushed on the foreground. I have continued to buildup more reds in the sky. Again no excess water.
Tricky part number one, using titanium white, pure and mixed, with some yellows on the palette, I brush on top of the strong red sky, but you must use think paint, no water, and a stiff brush, I was using a number 8 oil painters bristle filbert. They are pretty cheap and hold up to the scrubbing. I carved out the movement in the sky with a small palette knife.
I overlaid warm tones on the green and the using the side of the palette knife I scraped out some indications of reeds, weeds or grass. This was fun and energetic but not to be confused with a good painting.

I thought this was an oil painting when I first saw it. So creative!
Thank you for keeping us inspired – I’m always rewarded with something new when I check your blog. I think your groove is there but it is just quiet with awe.
Wow-an energetic watercolor, masquerading as both oil and acrylic! Your techniques would make a good video.
