I painted this painting of my lake from an image of my lake at sunset after a thunderstorm passed through.  The painting was a sequential wash piece with a primary was of Rose Madder Genuine and Transparent Yellow deep and then floating Cobalt Blue and Alizirin Crimson for the grayer sections.  Keeping everything really wet I let the tree forms float down over the the first washes to create the trees and their reflections.  I brushed in Thalo yellow green in the foreground to bring the grasses forward.

The poem just came to me as I was looking at the paining and it reminded me of my sister who loved to sit on the porch and watch the changing lake.  She just recently passed away after a long battle with cancer.

The feather

An angel flew up to the sun

Her Feathers fell like the leaves of fall.

Floating slowly

Dancing in perfect circles

And landing lightly on the lake

Like the kiss of a butterfly.

Left to drift with the slow currents

And lazy ripples

Until time draws them under

  1. Dear Steve, I am very sorry about the death of your sister. It is very important to me that you have shared it. I believe that sometimes the intense human feelings of pain or pleasure, inspire us enormously to get out of our soul, in this case the pain, in the form of a wonderful poem and an extraordinary watercolor. A big hug, Mercedes
