Today was another day of just getting myself ready for the workshop. I painted with a nice group of painters in Rockland, Maine at the city marina and I painted multiple pieces. The painting I am posting is a nice example of concentrating on the foundation of the painting, the contrast of lights and darks. The boats and dock were way across the harbor and I could just see them so I made up a bunch of the subject. My goal was to abstract the subject and really express the scene as an exciting light shape immersed in a large dark mass of color. This painting was quick and loose, not much time spent on the nuances.
no. 1
Darks under the pier
Rich translucent mystery
Push the boat forward
no. 2
White boat sleeps till noon
Wakes and leaves the dock lonely
Returns with the tide
Great lesson on white shapes. Thanks Steve
