I often paint from the same image and try to capture a different feeling with each painting. I am showing 2 watercolors and an oil and although they all represent this wonderful river scene each one has a slightly different feeling. I hope you enjoy them. 18×24 watercolor on arches 140lb rough paper
this painting has a cool blue violet cast to the sky and reflection and the water is very soft and velvety. The background is much more layered and has more depth. I found this painting to be a real challenge when I painted this as a demonstration for a watercolor workshop in Columbia Maryland.
12×16 watercolor on 300lb arches block
This painting is very grey brown and the lesson I was teaching with this demonstration was to really try to create depth in the painting using the movement of lights back through the painting. I do like the way the water moves through and into the painting. This was a demonstration for my Monday watercolor class.
11×14 oil on canvas panel
This was the first time I painted the scene and I struggled through this with oil. I don’t quite have the same active brushwork that I have with watercolors but then again I am still a pretty new beginning oil painter and I have been painting watercolors for a long time. I do think I will get to the same place with oils if I live long enough.
image of the river scene that I painted all three paintings from.
Brush work…amazing. I love the limited palette.
Hi Steve. I have liked very much your three paintings of the river …. yes, also the one in oil.
Steve, how do I send you the pic of the fisherman on the Broad River? Arlene
