In The Studio: A New Landscape in Opaque Watercolor

Watercolors

I have been playing around trying to figure out how to use opaque watercolors and I do find it to be lots of fun.  It is kind of strange in the fact that in the middle of the painting process it looks really unfinished and clunky.  It isn’t until you come back over top of the painting with refined lights and light middle values that is starts to look like a finished piece.  I think this one turned out pretty well.  This is a very late afternoon, low light situation at Pemaquid Point Maine.  I like the light.IMG_222811×15 opaque watercolor on tinted Bockingford paper

  1. You captured the light beautifully and thanks for the tips-just received my first shipment of guache-since I’m an oil painter I hope this will beless painful than transparent watercolor. Your brushwork is always so fresh-love it.

  2. Hi Steve…
I love the work you’ve been doing in Gouache.
This one….the light is beautiful. I know it would be too much extra work for you…….but sometimes I’d love to see a photo of the scene you used for your painting. It helps to see how you’ve interpreted it. What you left out…..possibly…what you’ve added.
    The mood…colours ..etc.
It’s a great painting. I also love your brush strokes.
Thanks for your generosity….sharing your artwork and talent with us. It’s very much appreciated. Ro x
